My Proposal

The brief I set myself was to create six outcomes of siblings using images/features of my parents.

To show the randomness or uncertainty of the outcomes I am planning on displaying them on a dice.

Along with six postcards showing the individual outcomes and use them as souvenirs to the viewers of the exhibit.

I also plan to create three A2 posters; an abstract type poster, two overlapped images on acetate and an image of myself made up of segments from photographs of myself.

I am planning on displaying my work on a a table; the dice on a higher level than the postcards with the A2 posters placed on a wall behind. I am also planning on connecting the central A2 poster of my parents to the six postcard outcomes in a family tree structure using black tape.

My focus is on the 'Unknown' and uncertenty of Siblings and how they are going to look so my pieces are going to have an abstract tone.

Ideas Development

On the subject of siblings and having looked back at the 'Wellcome' exhibit I have come up with the idea of
adding and taking away from images of my parents to create what would be an outcome of a sibling just like the obesity structure except mine would be 2D.
I could also use pictures of my parents and print them on acetate and over lap them to create an abstract out come like the x-ray piece.

Siblings

After looking at my family tree i began thinking about my other siblings and how they have a different family tree because only half will be the same as mine.
This then lead me to think about the siblings my mom lost before having me and made me wonder what they would have looked like.
If they would have taken more of my mothers features because i've got most of my dads.

My nan and her siblings look very similar whereas her children don't even though they all have the same father.

Tree Idea

After looking at the double helix from the DNA structure and my family tree i wanted to combine the two and create a structure.
The trunk would resemble the double helix and the leaves at the end of the branches would have names of people in my family.
Anybody who has past away will have their name on a leaf resting at the bottom of the tree.

Deoxyribonucleic Acid

Deoxyribonucleic acid
aka DNA is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms.

The main role of DNA molecules is the long-term storage of information. DNA is often compared to a set of blueprints or a recipe, or a code, since it contains the instructions needed to construct other components of cells, such as proteins.

The DNA segments that carry this genetic information are called genes, but other DNA sequences have structural purposes, or are involved in regulating the use of this genetic information.

My Family

I stared to look at my family tree and found a site where i could create one

From Harvey River:

A Memoir of My Mother and Her People

By Lorna Goodison
This a book written about my ancestors which are linked to me by my dads mother
Dollis May Harvey [Warmington].
My nan remembers people mentioned in the book and
it is owned by several members of my family.

The family tree starts with our English ancestor, William Harvey who moved to Jamaica and married a black women; they lived in a village in Hanover by a river that was named after them. This is also where my nan also grew up.

DNA Ancestry Testing

I began will researching my ethnic background, i looked into several tests about finding my ancestors migration routes
& things like what percentage of Indigenous American, European, African & East Asian i mite be for the price of $295.

After looking at different tests & sites this was the one
i was most interested in as it seemed to be the most specific.

'World DNA match' compare your DNA profile to over 250 different populationsfrom all over the world. To produce your top 20 matches to populations around the world. For the price of £150

http://www.dna-worldwide.com/ancestry-testing/world-dna-match/

After researching I found this to be too expensive I also found sites
which mention the limits of ancesry tests.

Looking at grandparents I worked out percentages on my ethnic background & im planning to look at my family tree instead.

Euston Exhibit

To begin out project we went to London to view the 'Wellcome' exhibit in London.

This is a photo i had taken of x-rays.

I have taken a strong liking to this piece because even though the bones are overlapped
you can still see through even though bones are solid. I also like the
abstract shapes and illusion it gives off.

These are images i had taken from a sculpture which displays obesity.

This piece interested me as it made me think of using the human form
and then defacing it, adding to it or just creating something new.

These are results of one mans DNA profiling. He had taken many test to find out things such as what percentage of his ethnic background was sub-serharen African, European ect.

I was very interested in this piece as have always wanted to take a similar test as i am from a mixed background but after researching it i found it was a costly route and will maybe have it done in the future.
